Aconitum napellus

I love this tall deep blue Monkshood, I have found that growing it in too much shade makes it weak & spindly so have moved it into a sunny position with the ground around it kept cool & also protected from that burning summer westerly sunshine. I think basically in needs a lot of good light to remain upright & happy. Height around 1.4m. Moist, well drained, lightly shaded position.

Aethionema schistosum

This Turkish native is covered with wonderfully fragrant pink spikes in early summer. Glaucous blue foliage remains attractive year round. Height 12cm. Sun.

Ajuga pyramidalis 'Metallica Crispa'

I love this tiny compact ajuga, It  grows in full sun, but it also grows & looks great in the light shady part of the woodland next to Hacquetia epipactus. Height 10cm.

Amsonia hubrichtii

Grow to approx. 1m.   Has starry blue flowers in Spring & willowy but best of all has fantastic Autumn colouring of yellow/gold.   A great plant that  looks good all year. Always gets comments from visitors & makes a lovely clump after a few seasons. Height approx 1m.

Amsonia illustris

Grows well in medium, moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates some drought once established. This plant is native to Missouri & known as the Ozark bluestar as it grows in that area of the state. The blue flowers sit in clusters on top of of the willowy leafed stems to 80cm.

Androsace lanuginosa

This is a trailing evergreen perennial that  forms greyish-green mat of many rosettes from which in summer  many pale pink/white flowers materialise.   Great for growing in the Rockery or over a wall.  Good drainage, sun.  It spreads to around 50cm. The flowers reach about 10cm high.

Anemone flaccida

This is a well behaved late winter flowering woodland Anemone. It has fairly big nicely marked leaves, quite big white flowers & is well behaved as appears when not a lot else is around & then quickly goes to sleep again so as not to smother new plants coming back into life after winter. Arabis bryoides

This is a great cushion-mat forming plant for a rockery. It grows for me in a sunny position in well drained gritty soil. The flowers are white & sit neatly above the masses of tiny slightly hairy rosettes of leaves. Does not like wet feet as in its natural habitat it grows amongst rocks. Height around 6cm in flower.

Arisaema sp

This came to me from Chen Yi in China a long time ago. I have it labeled as Arisaema biauriculatum but cant find any photos that look anything near to it & the name is a bit suspect as well. It eventually gets fairly tall,my adult plants are around 1m plus high. It has a whitish tint to it with the green & the stem is very nice. Its not A, tortuosum, it is very different from that. These are all offsets not flowering size yet, not sure how far away, probably a couple of years. If anyone can ID it...please tell.

Artemisia lactiflora 'Guizhou'

This form originally was discovered in Guizhou Province, China. Instead of the plain green leaved form, 'Guizhou' has dark green leaves from which arise red-purple stems clothed in pure white flowers to 1.2m - 1.5 high. Moist well drained soil in a sunny position

This impressive little plant was given to me by my Friend & Plantsman Don Scholfield. It appeared as a sport some years ago from his plain green Asarum . After time it will form a nice patch in the woodland garden.

Athyrium niponicum var. pictum

This is a special small clump forming fern that reaches around 40cm in height for me. Known as the Japanese painted fern, it likes a rich, moist, drained soil in semishade. It goes to sleep in winter & then in spring its fresh green fronds on dark red stems coated with a silver/pewter unfurl & create a nice effect. An easy fern to grow.

Biarum bovei

I have previously sold this as Biarum dispar but I now believe it is B. bovei as I now have B. dispar added to my collection & it is very much taller. The leaves of this Biarum are long & narrow. The dark brown/purple spathes which appear at ground level before the leaves in summer/autumn grow to 10cm high. I grow it in the sunny Rockery with good drainage in full sun

Calanthe aristulifera

This is a rare japanese species that grows in the mountain woods of Kyushu island. I imported a few years ago & only have very few to spare. The white to very pale violet tinted flowers sit on spikes of around 40cm high.

Calanthe sieboldii

This is a winter dormant plant well suited to outside - in a woodland garden. In spring, shoots slowly unfold to pleated bright green leaves around a cluster of many buds that expand to a lovely spike of bright golden-yellow flowers. One of the loveliest species and not difficult in a shady, well drained sheltered site that is not to dry when they are in growth, mine just get sprinkled along with everything else & thrive. I plant all of my ground growing orchids outside in dappled shade and dig in pearlite to help keep the soil open, & a small amount of blood and bone, and for this one a very SMALL amount of dolomite as my soil is quite acidic.  Flowering Size Plants

This is an evergreen woodland perennial that will gently self seed & brighten up shady areas with its double yellow flowers in spring. Height to around 30cm

Chloranthus fortunei 'Domino'

I am always asked about this plant in spring when visitors see it in the garden. A whorl of four leaves, push through the ground & unfurl purple/black when young, then go a nice shiny Dark Green. Long tassels of little white flowers appear later. A hardy clumper for woodland conditions in light shade. Not to dry. Height to around 40cm.

Darmera peltata

(Peltiphylum peltatum) This grows in my garden in soil that has been kept moist by digging in Coir Peat, I have also in a previous garden grown it in a Boggy area. Space is required for this plant, grow it in light shade, looks good with the giant Gunneras, its easy if kept moist. If really happy it can grow to around 2m high, but mine so far had managed about 1.2m. Light Shade otherwise the leaves will burn.

This is a compact species forming low grey mats with beautifully scented flowers to about 12cm High.

Dianthus pinifolius ex Rose Red

These are all seed grown from a very good form with rose red flowers, so hopefully its offspring will be the same colour. Dianthus pinifolius is a rare dryland species endemic to Turkey & the Balkans. The compact heads of ruby-red flowers are held high on wiry stems which arise to around 25cm from the compact mounds of upright grassy looking foliage.

This came to me as Dianthus callizonus....but I am not sure it is as it does not completely fit the description in the RHS book. Anyway the photo is of it in my rockerys, lots of people have commented on it. Flowers are mid pink & reach about 20cm High.

Disporum flavum

Very different from uvularia grandiflora. The whole plant is more compact & the leaves &the large bell shaped flowers. Lovely woodland plant. Height around 50cm. Morning sun in cooler areas or semi-shade. Plant in moist well drained soil.

This is a great plant for hard areas in dryish semishade or shade. It fairly quickly forms a colony & looks great along with hellibores. If you dont like plants that travel then use a pot. Heigh about 30cm.

Dryas octopetala

A beautiful evergreen alpine plant great for the rock garden. The pretty tiny scalloped leaves slowly form nice mat. Large white flowers are produced on short stems. It needs a good sunny well drained position, but its root area needs shade from the hot summer sun. I have sunk a rock into the ground to its north to keep the roots cool & I have it sheltered from the hot westerly summer sun. In very cold areas in winter the leaves will go a bronze colour. 10cm high

Eryngium ebracteatum

I have previously listed this as E. yuccifolium, but have now been told it is Eryngium ebracteatum, which looks correct. An eye catching plant for a sunny well drained spot. The slightly toothed elongated leaves that resemble a Yucca are topped with greenish cream flowers that look a bit like a thistle. Summer flowering Height in flower about 1.2m.

Fuchsia procumbens

A diminutive creeping groundcover endemic to New Zealand so for a cool semi-shaded position. Its tiny rounded bright green leaves make a good canvas for the pretty red, green & yellow summer flowers, followed by red berries. Reaches a height of around 12cm

Galanthus nivalis

G. nivalis (English Snowdrop) has grows in many parts of Europe & naturalises in some areas of UK. I remember my Mum standing in the winter woodland with the sun shining on her & all the thousands of Galanthus surrounding her. This is probably the most familiar member of the family to most people. Its also one of the smallest & in my opinion one of the nicest. Height around 12cm. Grow in a cool moist well drained position that gets winter sun.

Gentiana asclepiadea

This graceful Gentian hosts rich flaring trumpet flowers of a true blue in pairs all along the leaf axil. Often referred to as the willow gentian because of its arching growth & leaves resembling the weeping willow tree it is naturally found in mountain meadows of Asia & Europe. It flowers in late summer through to Autumn. I grow mine in moist well drained soil in morning sun, but I make sure the root area is kept cool same as for Clematis. otherwise it will expire. The weeping stems reach around 1m in length.

This Geranium has lots of violet-blue flowers above a mound of rounded deeply cut leaves in early summer & it just keeps flowering for me all through summer.. A strong grower 2 about 50cm high.

Gunnera Prorepens

This is a groundcover Gunnera, unlike some of its massive relatives. Grows to approx. 20cm high with brownish/Green foliage and bright red fruits on a 10 cm tall spikes in mid Summer. A native of South Africa found around costal areas. They are evergreen & like semishade & good drainage. The white paintbrush looking flowers appear in Autumn & reach a height of about 30cm.  Flowering Size Bulbs.

Haemanthus humilis ssp, hirsutus

Haemanthus are native to areas of South Africa. The leathery leaves of this one reach giant proportions. Stunning in flower with its pink multi-flowered spheres held well above the leaves. Also interestingly the flower sprouts from the underside of the leaves. Likes a semi-shaded position with good light & not too wet. I grow mine under a Picea Tree which is evergreen & protects the leaves from frost in winter. Plant with the neck of the bulb above soil level. These bulbs are around a couple of years away from producing flowers...hence the price.

Imperata cylindrical 'Rubra'

I grow this on a hot sunny slope, the red in the leaves looks great along with the orange flowers of Sandersonia aurantiaca & the blue of Adenophora triphylla. It has a delicate refined appearance but is very hardy & clumps rather nicely. Approx. 40 cm high.

Iris 'Pink Champagne'

Unfortunately as many of you already know, when we moved here from our previous home many of the labels were lost or mixed up & the little irises were the main victims. So the photo of any of these are true to colour & happily growing here at 'Foggy Dew'. Height of this one is about 16cm.

Leucosceptrum japonicum 'Mountain Madness'

The lightly serrated green leaves of this Leucosceptrum are delicately splashed with cream which sits well against its soft creamy yellow flowers in late summer/Autumn. Height to about 50cm, likes some sun & Moisture, so grow it in dappled shade (not direct hot summer sun). Only very few of these.

Malva moschata Alba

I love this old fashioned perennial. It like moist well drained soil in full sun. The saucer shaped white flowers have a dusting of silvery pink at the centre & can grow to 6cm across. Height around 1m

Maurandya erubescens

A vine from Mexico also known as Asarina erubescens or Lophospermum erubescens. Fast growing to about 2m. It likes lots of light, sun in cooler climates or part shade in hot areas. Good fertile moist soils are best, also excels in a pot! Plenty of large pink Gloxinia type flowers summer to Autumn. Looks best climbing up something such as trellis but will also cascade over a wall.

Meconopsis cambrica

I love this Meconopsis, it is easy to grow at 'Foggy Dew' in a lightly shaded area. I also grow some in morning sun here in Leura & they are happy. These are all from the double red/orange form M. Muriel Brown which for me reproduces around 95% true, but because I have not seen them in flower I am selling them as the single form in the photo they will flower this season. They like good drainage.

Monarda 'Schneewittchen'

A fast growing, creeping ground cover plant. Can also look great in lawns. Grows to around 6cm high and as wide as you want it to be. Very nice.

Omphalodes cappadocica

A relation of the Forget-me-not. They do best in a rich, moist lightly shaded woodland setting, the thick mounds of deep green leaves are useful among shrubs, or in the rock garden. Airy sprays of the brightest/deepest blue flowers appear in early spring. Looks great planted with yellow leafed hostas and ferns. Approx. 20cm high

Pachysandra Procumbens

Very different from the weedy groundcover version seen around. This is a clump forming plant with large, green leaves that are highly mottled and veined especially when in new growth. Foliage is at the end of lax stems that reach to around 25cm. Evergreen in warmer winter or protected areas. One of the nicest woodland ground-covers. Flowers late winter/spring. The old leaves lay flat and the flowers really stand out upright, I have always had lots of comments about this plant.

Paeonia Emodi

Native to part of the western mountain ranges of the Himalayas. An early blooming species with lush, shiny green foliage is red-tinged on emergence. In Spring it produces waxy white flowers with yellow stamens. It is among the tallest of the herbaceous species it reaches 80cm - 1m high here. These are flowering size divisions.  Very few.

Paris quadrifolia

This Paris has a creeping rhizome​ which makes a nice patch in the woodland garden. It like moist well drained neutral to slightly acidic soil that does not completely dry out, in a lightly shaded area...not too dark but not direct hot summer sun. It flowers late spring early summer & reaches a height of around 40cm.

Penstemon pinifolius

This species Penstemon is very different from the usual big hybrid ones. It reaches about 25cm high, it is shrubby. The fine new growth hold tiny needle like leaves and at the top the little red flowers bloom. Very small and dainty. Sunny position with good drainage.

Penstemon tubaeflorus

This North American native Penstemon comes from areas with a higher rainfall, so will tolerate wetter areas unlike some of the others in the genus. Produces showy white flowers on spires of about 80cm. Sun.

Persicaria bistorta 'Superba' (Polygonum bistorta 'Superba')

I love this old time plant, but do not dare plant it in the garden.....A big pot or bog garden where it can be contained & kept moist is what is needed here.....otherwise it tends to travel more than what I consider is OK. Its just such a pretty plant with its thick pink bottlebrush flowers, so well worth the effort. Height to 75 cm when happy.

Phlomis cashmeriana

Endemic to parts of the Himalayas & Kashmir this plant likes a sunny well drained spot thats not always overly wet. Its upright growth holds the beautiful whorls of lilac coloured flowers to around 85cm high. An easy plant that takes dry conditions & does not mind frost

I love this tough, tiny compact Phlomis, I grow it in my rockery where it thrives with full sun & good drainage, but it would look just as good growing on the edge of a low wall. Phlox paniculata 'Bright Pink'

This Phlox has the same bright pink flowers as 'Starfire' but has the plain green leaves instead of the purplish ones. Grows to about 80cm.

Podophyllum 'Spotty Dotty'

A new hybrid thought to be between P. delavayi & difforme. In spring the leaves push through the soil & look like closed umbrella's. The base colour is green but is covered with reddish brown markings which hold all through summer into autumn. The bright red star shaped flowers hang under the leaves in spring. Height around 40cm. Podophyllum versipelle

A really good Podophyllum from China, much taller & with much deeper lobing of leaves than P. Pleianthum this has a 80 - 90cm tall stem with large 20-50cm umbrella like leaf deeply lobed & underneath hang flowers of deep purple/Red. Makes a great accent plant in the woodland garden.

Polygonatum cirrhifolium (var. Orange/Red Form)

Everyone asks ' What is that ??" when they visit the garden in spring. This amazing cousin of the common Solomon' s Seal was imported by me years ago. The usual form of P. cirrhifolium has white flowers. So far it has reached around 8ft high, so need support, or you can grow up through a shrub or through Roses. In winter you get a bonus with large bright orange berries to brighten the woodland garden.

Polygonatum commutatum (P giganteum. P canaliculatum)

This appears to go under a few names, I wish whoever decides all this would make a decision that sticks. I have had this for a while & it gets taller each year. I grow it in a lightly shaded area that gets fairly dry as the tree roots are really nasty to it. I have now just moved it to a nicer more friendly position & divided it. It will be interesting to see if it gets even taller. Height so far is 1.5m. The whole plant is larger than normal, the leaves the stem etc.

A selection of Solomon's seal has a combination of white margin and yellow striped leaves. The contrast of red stem and bright variegation is remarkably beautiful in a woodland setting. Grows to approx 60cm & is adorned with small white dangling bell shaped flowers in spring. This form will grow well in shade but does better with some good light or dappled sun.

Primula 'Lady Greer'

Imported some years back from New Zealand Primula 'Lady Greer' is a tiny plant that has the general appearance of Primula elatior (the oxlip primula) with short, upright stems, each bearing a small cluster of pale yellow flowers. It soon makes a good patch of colour. It pays to split the clumps every 2 or 3 years.

This is the white flowering form of this primula from Japan. It has leaves that are scalloped & slightly furry. It forms a good ground cover over time as it spreads by underground roots. Reaches about 16cm high. Nice.

Primula sieboldii 'Sparkler'

Primulas sieboldii 'Sparkler' comes into flower a lot later than the Primula vulgaris varieties. They all like a bit more shade as otherwise the leaves tend to burn if we have one of those unexpected early hot spring days. They also require moisture.

Very closely related to Rhodohypoxis these little tubers are from South Africa & are hardy. They love sun, good drainage, so the rockery is a good place for them. A striking plant that forms spreading clumps of large, divided, veined leaves & flower stems with feathery sprays of small, creamy white flowers. It makes a great feature plant in a damp lightly shaded position. Grow to approx 80cm high.

Roscoea auriculata

This attractive species grows a foot or more tall in an old large tin bath in the garden. It has showy purple flowers with white throats in mid-summer. Grow in light shade to sun in humus rich, moist but well drained soil. Native to the Himalayas. I have found that they flower better with some sun, but if you have very hot summers, then bright semishade, or maybe morning sun. Height around 40cm.

A superb low shrub growing shrub to liven up dry, shady areas in a garden. Native to the Mediterranean region & North Africa. It has small dark green leaves which are sharp on the tip and small, inconspicuous white flowers in spring. These flowers are followed later in the year by lots of the best ever, bright red berries that are held on the top of actual leaf (I like this plant).

Scabiosa japonica var alpina

This tiny alpine is endemic to areas of high elevation in Japan. It flowers early summer right through to autumn forming a small mound of grey-green foliage which emerges with a ferny appearance as the plant ages. The small round flowers are a soft lavender-blue. Sempervivums are amazingly tough plants, they don't like wet soggy soil & do very well & look great for example pushed into holes in a drystone wall (push in some soil first for the roots to grow into). They like morning sun & good drainage.

Sisyrinchium macrocarpum

This very attractive Sisyrinchium has some of the largest flowers in its genus, producing large cups of bright yellow, with a beautifully contrasting purple-brown ring inside. Grows to approx 15 - 20cm high, the flowers are around 2cm round and has interesting hairy seed pods.

Streptopus sp.

This plant I imported from China many years ago. It came as Streptopus sp. & I have not been able to identify exactly which one it is. It has the twisted or zig zag shaped stems that identify Streptopus. Creamy yellow flowers. Grows to around 20cm high and makes a nice patch over time. Hardy woodland plant.

Tradescantia ' Sweet Kate's Blue & Gold'

I imported this plant from a nursery in Washington State USA about 12 years ago now. It will grow in full sun to light shade, but the yellow colour of the foliage goes greenish if to shady. It likes some moisture & if cut back to the ground in summer when it looks tired you will get nice fresh foliage & another flush of flowers in Autumn.

Wulfenia amherstiana

A nice little alpine plant from Afghanistan & the Himalayas. It forms small evergreen rosettes of leathery leaves that are strongly scalloped The flowers are held on rigid stems & reach up to approx 15 - 20 cm high. The blue-violet flowers are all on the same side of the stem which makes the flower spikes all lean over slightly one way which created an interesting look. Grows in full sun to light shade. Looks good in a Rockery.
